In December of 2009, the Republican Chaves County Magistrate Judge for Division II retired. With nearly 8000 cases heard in one year, the need to fill that position was great. John Halvorson stepped forward to serve Chaves County because he has been committed to serving his community his entire life.
As a young man, Judge Halvorson earned his Eagle Scout. He retired from the Roswell Police Department as a decorated sergeant after 20 years of service. He then served the City of Roswell and Chaves County as a Misdemeanor Court Compliance Officer and as the Coordinator in the DWI program.

John Halvorson was appointed in January of 2010 to fill the vacated seat and earned his Certificate of Magistrate Qualification and completed his Magistrate Judge Mentorship program in record time.
